An Objection to a Fatwa of Deoband and Its Answer

Question

To the noble presence of the respected Qari Muhammad Tayyib, may his blessings endure, rector of Dar al-Ulum Deoband. As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Question: Here in Bangalore there is a certain mulla, Mawlawi K. H. Ibrahim by name, who is very adept at splitting hairs and who for a long time has been extracting passages from the books of Mawlana Mawdudi, twisting and distorting them, and sowing discord among the Muslims.

Answer

Honoured and respected Sir, may your honour be increased! As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. The chief mufti of the Dar al-Ulum, Mufti Mahdi Hasan, and the deputy mufti, Mufti Mas‘ud Ahmad, had fallen seriously ill; for this reason it was temporarily arranged that Mufti Mahmud Ahmad Nanotawi should stay [here] for some time.
