Was Islam Completed by the Martyrdom of Hazrat Husayn?
Question
A man of the Sunni madhhab, at a gathering where Shi‘a — both the elite and the common people — were present and listening, declared in the course of his speech with the utmost vehemence: “By the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Husayn ﵁ Islam was completed; otherwise Islam would have remained incomplete,” and he also said: “The Muslim who does not weep over the event of the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Husayn ﵁ is eternally wretched (shaqi azali).
Answer
The belief of the Ahl al-Sunna wa-l-Jama‘a is that the religion of Islam was completed during the earthly life of the Noble Prophet ﷺ itself; that is, no matter of religion remained that had not been set forth, either in itself or in its root and foundation.
