Conveying Reward to the Shi‘a and Prayer Behind One Who Recites the Qur’an at Their Graves
Question
Zayd is a hafiz of the Qur’an and the imam of a mosque, and a Shi‘i has engaged Zayd to recite the Holy Qur’an in his graveyard. Every morning Zayd recites one juz of the Qur’an, a little more or less, at the Shi‘i graves and conveys [the reward] to the deceased. Some Muslims objected to Zayd: on account of the above, is prayer behind Zayd permissible or not? Zayd says that the Noble Prophet ﷺ conveyed reward (isal al-thawab)
Answer
Their beliefs should be ascertained. If those Shi‘a held beliefs of kufr, then praying for their forgiveness and conveying reward to them is haram; in that case, if [Zayd] does not desist and another person better qualified for the imamate is available, he should be made the imam. Making Zayd the imam is makruh tahrimi.
