Selling the Hide of a Dead Animal
Question
Is it permissible or not to remove and sell the hide of a halal animal that has died — such as a cow, buffalo, goat, frog, monitor lizard, water snake or jackal and the like? If the answer is in the affirmative, what is the manner of doing so?
Answer
If these animals die, it is permissible to remove their hides, tan them (dibagha) and sell them: [ar]كُلُّ إِهَابٍ دُبِغَ فَقَدْ طَهُرَ[/ar] “Every hide that has been tanned becomes pure” — thus in the books of fiqh: al-Hidaya and others.
