Buying and Selling an Untanned Hide (Ihab)
Question
May one buy the wet hide of a dead animal — that is, a lion, a cheetah and the like — and then, after applying salt and the like to it and drying it, sell it, or not?
Answer
Buying the fresh hide of a dead animal (without tanning it) is not permissible; this is a void sale (bayʿ batil). However, if its hide is made, by applying salt and the like, such that it is protected from decaying and rotting, then selling and buying it are all permissible — except for the pig.
