Special Acts on the Day of ‘Ashura
Question
Are the following things sunna on the Day of ‘Ashura or not? (1) Weeping out of fear of Allah; (2) performing the funeral prayer; (3) reciting Surah al-Ikhlas abundantly; (4) visiting the graves of one’s parents and, having recited some verses, conveying the reward to them and to all the deceased; (5) conveying reward to the souls of the martyrs of Karbala — for instance, [by preparing] halim or khichra (thick stews of grains, pulses and meat); is this the sunna of Nuh ﵇ or not? (6) Performing ghusl; (7)
Answer
(1) One should always weep out of fear of Allah. When a funeral is present, the prayer over it is fard kifaya. Surah al-Ikhlas should be recited every day. Visiting the graves of one’s parents — indeed, the graves of the believers in general — is mustahabb every week, and isal al-thawab (conveying reward to the deceased) is mustahabb as well.
