Distributing Sweets on the Last Wednesday of Safar
Question
Here in Moradabad, on the last Wednesday of the month of Safar, the owners of the utensil workshops distribute sweets to the craftsmen. Without exaggeration, this is an expense of thousands of rupees, because there are hundreds of craftsmen and each receives roughly a quarter-seer (a seer is a unit of weight, ≈ 0.93 kg) of sweets, more or less; besides them, many other connected people have to be fed too.
Answer
Holding a celebration of joy on the last Wednesday of the month of Safar and distributing sweets and the like has no basis in the Sacred Law. The ghusl of recovery on this date is not established; the narration of the intensification of the illness, however, is in “Madarij al-Nubuwwa”.
