The Special Features of the Day of ‘Ashura
Question
In “Mazahir-e Haqq” (vol. 2, p. 142, the chapter on charity) it is narrated from Hazrat ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud ﵁ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: whoever fasts on the Day of ‘Ashura and is generous in spending on his family and dependants, Allah ﷻ will grant him abundance, and that abundance will remain with him for the rest of the year. Sufyan al-Thawri ﵀ said: “I tested it and found it to be so.” Some, however, such as al-Bayhaqi, have called [this hadith] weak.
Answer
The merit of fasting and of generous spending [on the family] on the Day of ‘Ashura is found in other books too; there is no harm in it — rather, it is good. As for all the other matters mentioned, their being specific to this day is not established by hadith or fiqh.
