The Rajab Bread

Question

When the month of Rajab al-Murajjab comes, people have some sweet bread baked on Friday and have Surat al-Mulk recited forty-one times — they call it “Tabarak”. Everyone knows full well that this bread is being given on behalf of the deceased as fidya, sadaqa or charity; yet the reciters vie with one another to obtain this bread and bring it home tied up in bundles from various places.

Answer

In the case asked about, this form of isal al-thawab (conveying reward to the deceased) is established neither by the Qur’an, nor by the noble hadith, nor from the noble Companions ﵃, nor from the books of the jurists and mujtahids; rather, it is a fabrication. Such a thing is called bid‘a in the Sacred Law, and abandoning it is obligatory (wajib).
