The ‘Ashura Prayer

Question

Some venerable scholars perform on the Day of ‘Ashura a prayer of four rak‘as with recitation (qira’a) in congregation, and the congregation is very large. Is performing prayer in congregation on the Day of ‘Ashura established in the Sacred Law, or is it bid‘a (innovation in religion)? Should one abandon it or take part in it?

Answer

This prayer is not established in the Sacred Law; it is bid‘a, and abandoning it is obligatory.
