The Customs of Muharram
Question
On the occasion of the great martyrdom of Hazrat Husayn ﵁ — the custom of making and carrying the ta‘ziya (a replica of Imam Husayn’s tomb carried in Muharram processions), wearing black, going bareheaded, putting dust on the head, beating the head, keeping the head dry of oil and the like, mourning rites, wailing, lamentation, singing mourning elegies in which the elders of the religion are insulted, weeping with loud cries, taking out standards (‘alam)
Answer
The martyrdom of Hazrat Sayyiduna Husayn ﵁ is certainly a painful event, and a soul-wrenching occurrence for those who are bound by devotion and love to the household of prophethood. Everyone must take a lesson from it — how one ought to stand firm upon the truth: the rank of one who drinks the cup of martyrdom rather than bow before some tyrannical power is very high.
