Giving the Adhan at the Grave
Question
In our locality the adhan is given at the grave after the deceased is buried. The local imam, citing Bihishti Zewar (“Heavenly Ornaments”), “Shami” and other books, stated that giving the adhan at the grave is not correct; but some people obtained a fatwa on this matter from the “Daftar-e Astana” (the shrine office, Delhi), in which, citing al-Durr al-Mukhtar and Fatawa Razawiyya, giving the adhan at the grave is written to be permissible. What is correct? Kindly write with references.
Answer
This issue has been written in the Hanafi books by transcription from the Shafi‘i books, and in the Shafi‘i books its refutation is also written; the Hanafi books themselves are directly silent on it. Mawlana Ahmad Raza Khan has written a separate treatise on this, but has not cited any explicit proof in its support.
