Du‘a after the Prayer and Saying “Amin” Aloud to It
Question
An imam began to lead the du‘a after the prayer; among all the followers (muqtadis) one said “Allahumma amin” in a loud voice, and at the end of the du‘a said aloud: [ar]بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ[/ar] “By Your mercy, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy!” At this a scholar of the religion said: “Who committed this bid‘a in the manner of the Bombay people? Most of the people of Bombay do this; it is a bid‘a.
Answer
There is no harm in doing so occasionally; it is indeed established. But making it binding (iltizam) and reproaching the person who does not do it is prohibited. Generally the beginning is just like this, and then, through persistence and binding oneself to it, it takes the form of a distinguishing mark (shi‘ar) for a certain group.
