The Essential Finality of Prophethood (Khatm al-Nubuwwa Dhati)
Question
In the book of Hazrat Mawlana Madani “al-Shihab al-Thaqib”, p. 78, there is this passage: “So, in view of his original attribute and essential perfection, it would be possible that some prophet come after him, even though this possibility has become impossible for some external reason.” Is this the very same meaning as that of the passage which the “Mujaddid Barelvi” quoted on p. 14: that if the existence of some prophet after you were supposed, it would cause no breach in your being the Seal — and so on?
Answer
Hazrat Mawlana Muhammad Qasim Nanotawi, in his book “Tahdhir al-Nas”, while explaining a report (athar) of Hazrat ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas ﵄, wrote the following. One meaning of the Holy Messenger’s ﷺ being Khatam al-Nabiyyin (the Seal of the Prophets) is the very one that is present in everyone’s minds, namely that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came after all the prophets ﵈.
