An oath to go to Pakistan

Question

Question: Bakr and his two friends went to the mosque and swore: “We three will go to Pakistan.” One of the companions has since passed away, nobody was able to go to Pakistan, and now these two also do not wish to go to Pakistan. So what is the ruling concerning the oath?

Answer

The one who passed away has broken his oath, and it was obligatory upon him to make a bequest (wasiyya) for the kaffara. As for the two who are living, their oath has not yet been broken: when the possibility of going there comes to an end, then the oath will be broken and kaffara will become due.
