Swearing to a wife’s chastity
Question
Question: May one swear an oath to the chastity of one’s wife? If he swore, the wife’s parents and guardian (wali) will separate husband and wife. So kindly answer: should he agree to khul‘ with his wife, or swear to her chastity and purity?
Answer
An oath is sworn by the name of Allah and His attributes; to demand an oath on the wife’s chastity and to swear it is wrong and prohibited. The wife’s parents and others must desist from their obstinacy, otherwise they will be caught up in grievous calamity.
