Is swearing an oath a sign of being a liar?
Question
Question: Should a Muslim believe another Muslim’s oath or not? For example, a man who is outwardly devout, righteous and a hafiz of the Qur’an swore by God about some matter in front of a respected religious scholar, but the respected scholar thereupon recited a hadith and said that whoever swears is, according to this hadith, a liar.
Answer
Swearing oaths at every turn is the habit of a lying man; it is not the way of a truthful one, as is seen by experience and observation day and night. However, you have not written the hadith on the basis of which the respected scholar declares the one who swears to be a liar; it would have been better had you written it, so that it could be investigated.
