“If I do such-and-such, then may I eat the flesh of the Prophet ﷺ”
Question
Question: Zayd swore: “If from now on, for the rest of my life, I eat sweet vermicelli or drink tea, then may I eat the flesh of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Likewise Bakr swore: “If I ever speak with Zayd in my life, then may I eat the flesh of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ” (we seek refuge with Allah). All these oaths were sworn in a state of anger. What we now need to know is: is it permissible according to the Shari‘a to swear such oaths and to abide by them or not? And if an expiation (kaffara)
Answer
Swearing such an oath is a sign of extreme ignorance and hard-heartedness (qasawa). He should act contrary to his oath, that is, eat the sweet vermicelli and drink the tea, and, to punish his own self (nafs), feed ten poor people two meals to their fill.
