An oath not to go to the mosque

Question

Question: Some people were engaging in idle talk (khurafat) in the mosque. I forbade them, and they began to quarrel, whereupon I swore: “I will not come to the mosque” (میں مسجد میں نہیں آؤنگا). What is the ruling for me: will the oath be broken by going to the mosque, or will I have to pay kaffara?

Answer

You made a mistake in swearing such an oath. Go to the mosque, and then pay the kaffara for your oath. The kaffara is this: to feed ten needy people (masakin) to their fill twice, or to give clothing to ten poor people; if you do not have that much means, keep three consecutive fasts. And in future do not do such things.
