An oath with the Glorious Qur’an placed on the hand

Question

Question: May one swear by the Noble Word of Allah (Kalam Allah) in order to do or not do some thing? If not, then what should be done on such occasions when doing it, or having it done, is extremely necessary? An oath (half) is taken by placing the hand on the Glorious Qur’an. Accordingly, how would it be if, with the hand placed on the Glorious Qur’an, the following words were made to be said: “I, taking an oath, promise that I will not do such-and-such a thing in future for the rest of my life”?

Answer

In the Shari‘a, taking an oath is in itself disliked. Nevertheless, if an oath has been sworn in this way, it will be valid in the Shari‘a; if it concerns the future, then acting contrary to it will make expiation (kaffara) binding.
