Swearing a false oath by the Noble Qur’an
Question
Question: If a person swears a false oath by the Noble Qur’an, does it follow that he becomes an oath-breaker (hanith) with respect to that statement, or not?
Answer
Swearing a false oath deliberately is a false oath (yamin ghamus), which is a major sin and is close to shirk, as stated in the hadith. Furthermore, a person becomes an oath-breaker (hanith) by swearing about the future and then acting contrary to it, which makes expiation (kaffara) binding. In the case described, kaffara is not binding.
