Swearing by the Qur’an, by the Word of Allah and by children
Question
Question: “By Allah,” “by God and the Messenger,” “by the children or by the child” — which of these four oaths may one be made to swear? If someone, taking the Qur’an in his hand and placing his other hand on a child’s head, swears thus: “Let the Noble Qur’an be witness, by God, whatever I shall say or the statement I am giving is all true,” is it permissible according to the Sacred Law to do so?
Answer
Swearing and exacting oaths at every turn is a wrong practice. At a time of dire need one may swear and exact an oath by any of the names and any of the attributes of Allah Most High: Allah, Khuda (the Persian word for God), Rahman, Rahim, Khaliq (Creator), Malik (Owner), and the like.
