An oath to fast and give sadaqa

Question

Question: A person said: “If I begin teaching religious knowledge, I will keep three fasts every month and will give two rupees of the monthly salary as sadaqa” (اگر میں علم دین پڑھانے لگوں تو ہر مہینہ میں تین روزے رکھوں گا، اور دو روپے ماہواری تنخواہ میں سے صدقہ کیا کروں گا). God accepted this supplication of his: he taught religious knowledge for four or five years. After that he sometimes fasted and sometimes did not, and he also sometimes gave the sadaqa and sometimes did not.

Answer

Three fasts and two rupees of sadaqa every month are binding (lazim) upon him. If some months have passed without the fasts and the sadaqa, making them up (qada’) is binding.
