Swearing an oath while lifting the Qur’an

Question

Question: Zayd wanted to obtain an undertaking from Bakr about some matter. Bakr made a promise, but Zayd did not trust him; so Bakr, in anger, lifted up the Noble Word of Allah (Kalam Allah). In the same way Bakr wanted to obtain a promise from Zayd about some matter, and Zayd, to reassure Bakr, lifted up the Noble Word of Allah and, placing God and the Messenger in between, made the promise. Now one of them has broken his promise.

Answer

Since the promise was made while lifting the Noble Qur’an: if an oath was also sworn, then as long as the oath is in accordance with the Shari‘a it is not permissible to break it; and if it is contrary to the Shari‘a, then breaking it is wajib, and expiation (kaffara) is also wajib.
