Painting the Mosque with Foul-Smelling Paint
Question
Is it permissible to paint the mosque with paint to which turpentine and other kinds of oil-based ingredients that have a foul smell have been added in order to fix the colour? The smell lasts for quite a few days and then disappears. Is it permissible to apply such paints in the mosque or not?
Answer
It is makruh tahrimi. The mosque should be protected from everything foul-smelling — so much so that the Prophet ﷺ forbade coming to the mosque with a foul-smelling mouth after eating raw onion and garlic without cleaning the mouth; the jurists too have written that it is makruh.
