Burning Kerosene in the Mosque

Question

(1) The condition of the Muslims here is very poor: they cannot burn sesame oil in the mosque. So may they burn kerosene in the mosque or not? (2) May kerosene be burned outside the mosque, where wudu and the like are performed, even if its light also keeps reaching the mosque courtyard?

Answer

The principle is that a foul smell causes great harm to the angels, and to people as well; therefore bringing anything foul-smelling into the mosque is prohibited. If the kerosene is kept outside the mosque in such a way that the smell does not come into the mosque, it is permissible.
