Burning in the Mosque Lantern Oil Said to Be Distilled from Alcohol
Question
Here, gas lanterns burn in all the mosques. It is said that the oil burned in them is distilled from alcohol. Is there any prohibition from the standpoint of the Shariʿa on burning it in the mosque? If it is prohibited, please inform us in writing.
Answer
If the oil contains components of alcohol, then using it is impermissible; and if there are no components of alcohol but it is merely kerosene, then burning it in the mosque is prohibited. Yes, if it is some other oil which has no foul smell, or the kerosene itself has somehow been purified such that no foul smell remains, then burning it in the mosque is also correct.
