Passing Wind in the Mosque
Question
People who stay seated in the mosque — travellers, students and the like, worshippers and others — or fall asleep there, and pass wind there intentionally or unintentionally: is this contrary to the etiquette of the mosque? And how far is the well-known saying true that if someone passes wind in the mosque, the angels take it in their mouths and throw it outside?
Answer
Precaution and etiquette (adab) require that one should not pass wind in the mosque intentionally, but rather go outside the mosque and pass it there. If it comes out unintentionally, whether asleep or awake, then that is a matter of being excused. For a person who has another place available to sleep, sleeping in the mosque without dire need is makruh.
