Gatherings and Speeches in the Mosque

Question

At the present time, gatherings are held in mosques which carry many complications within them: in them, besides the speeches, matters reach the point of noise and clamour, scuffles and abuse; taunts are hurled at one another, and reproach and vilification are resorted to. Sometimes most of the listeners and some of the speakers display such baseness of character as would be impossible to find even in coffee houses. What is the ruling regarding mosques in which such acts are committed?

Answer

Holding a gathering in the mosque to explain the rulings of the Shariʿa is permissible. The speaker and preacher should, with the utmost dignity and seriousness, convey to those present and explain to them the words of Allah Most High and His Messenger ﷺ, and the listeners too should listen to it with the utmost etiquette and reverence and act upon it.
