An Interest-Bearing Loan for a Mosque
Question
In a village called Bahadurnagar in the Gangoh area, a mosque is being built. The situation regarding the expenses of its construction is this: the villagers had, for the time being, fixed a certain amount of grain for the construction of the mosque and collected grain as a donation, in order to sell it and build the mosque.
Answer
An interest-bearing loan is indeed impermissible according to the Shari‘a; but because the wages of the masons and labourers were paid by taking such a loan, and lime and the like were bought for the mosque with this loan, prayer in this mosque will not become prohibited; rather, prayer in it is valid. In future they should avoid taking interest-bearing loans.
