Prayer in a Mosque Built with the Proceeds of Wine
Question
Zayd, a Muslim, sells wine and has become very wealthy. He performs the five daily prayers. At present Zayd does not do it himself; servants and relatives do it, but they do so at Zayd’s own order. Will the prayer of us Muslims be valid in his mosque? The money spent on the mosque is wine money. Our local ʿulama say that his worship will not even be accepted, and that prayer performed in his mosque will not be valid either.
Answer
If that mosque was built with income from wine, then praying in it is makruh. The prayers that have been performed there were discharged with karaha (reprehensibility); in future caution should be exercised.
