Minarets of a Mosque
Question
In our mosque there were formerly four old minarets at the four corners. Now, after that, a veranda is to be built in front; in front of it, too, foundations of minarets have been laid, and those minarets too have been left level with the veranda, that is, two to two and a half feet above the roof. Now the people intend to build them up, and there will be six minarets. So is this not something against the Shari‘a? Should two minarets be demolished?
Answer
Regarding minarets there is no limitation or specification from the Shari‘a. However, the appearance of a mosque should be such that those who see it recognize that it is a mosque. It is the common practice to build two minarets; some mosques have four and some even more, but none of this is due to any Sharʿi command, nor is there any prohibition.
