Decorative patterns on the walls of a mosque

Question

Is it permissible to make decorative patterns and paintings in a mosque — whether inside or outside — or not?

Answer

Making decorative patterns in a mosque other than on the qibla wall is correct, but not from waqf property: [ar]ولا بأس بنقش المسجد بالجص والساج وماء الذهب ونحوه — إلى قوله — إذا فعل من مال نفسه، أما المتولي فلا يجوز أن يفعل من مال الوقف إلا ما يرجع إلى إحكام البناء، حتى لو جعل البياض فوق السواد للنقاء ضمن.
