Seven aqiqa shares in a large animal outside the days of sacrifice

Question

Question: On days other than the days of sacrifice, may a cow be slaughtered for aqiqa in seven shares or not? Zayd wishes, during these days, to perform the aqiqa of his son and daughters by dividing a cow into shares instead of using male goats. Is this permissible or not?

Answer

Outside the days of sacrifice, slaughtering a cow, buffalo or camel independently for aqiqa is correct according to the Shariʿa, and it may contain seven shares of aqiqa. There is a noble hadith on this in “al-Muʿjam al-Saghir”, and a specific ruling (juzʾiyya) derived from it is mentioned in “Risala-i ʿAqiqa”.
