Is the aqiqa also performed after 21 days?
Question
Question: In the first volume of Tirmidhi it says that it is mustahabb to perform the aqiqa up to the 21st day, and there is no detail about what comes after that. Is the child deprived of the merits of the aqiqa that apply up to the 21st day, or is the same reward obtained after the 21st day too, whenever it is performed?
Answer
Some other books say the same, but it has already been quoted above from Sharh Safar al-Sa‘ada without this restriction; moreover, Fath al-Bari quotes Imam al-Rafi‘i ﵀ as saying that it should be done before maturity and not be delayed beyond that, otherwise it lapses. Nevertheless, if a person performs his own aqiqa after maturity, that is valid.
