The time limit for aqiqa
Question
Question: Hazrat Shaykh al-Hind ﵀ (is this said of Hazrat Mawlana Mahmud Hasan, the muhaddith, or of someone else?) wrote in the Ta‘liqat on al-Tirmidhi, under the hadith of aqiqa, “up to 21 days”. So after 21 days does aqiqa remain merely a custom, or can aqiqa be performed at any time in one’s life whenever one wishes?
Answer
Aqiqa in itself is mubah (permissible); if it is performed with the intention of following (ittiba‘), reward is obtained. Its original time is the seventh day after birth (one day before the day of birth). In Sharh Safar al-Sa‘ada (p. 383)
