Does the wajib lapse when the sacrificial animal dies?

Question

Zayd bought an animal for sacrifice and it died before the sacrifice. Will Zayd have to buy another animal, or will the wajib lapse from him?

Answer

If Zayd is wealthy, he will have to buy another animal, and its sacrifice will be binding on him. If he is poor, it is not binding on him to buy another animal and sacrifice it (“Majma‘ al-Anhur”, vol. 2, p. 520).
