Is sacrifice required on behalf of all members of the household?
Question
Question: In a house there are several women and men, for example a wife, mother, brother, father, sister and children — whether they are alive or some of them have died — and Zayd, because of straitened means, cannot perform the sacrifice (udhiya) in the names of many people. In such a situation, should he each year perform the sacrifice in the name of one relative or close person — for example, from the relations mentioned above, whether alive or dead — one per year; in the name of the one upon whom zakat is…
Answer
The one upon whom the sacrifice is wajib must perform the sacrifice every year. On behalf of one upon whom it is not wajib, there is a choice — he may perform it or not; if he performs it he will receive reward, and if he does not, there will be no sin. However, performing it by taking a loan is not right.
