Repeating the word “talaq” with the intention of emphasis
Question
Question: Zayd gave talaq to his wife Hinda in the course of a quarrel and a fight; he repeated the word “talaq” again and again. Zayd says: “When, in saying the word ‘talaq,’ I used the word ‘talaq’ a second and a third time, my intention was the repetition of the word ‘talaq’; I repeated this word by way of emphasis (ta’kid); there was no intention of effecting three independent talaqs. In this way the number of three talaqs, three times, was completed.
Answer
If the husband, after saying the word “talaq” once, repeated it again and again merely with the intention of emphasis, his mind being free (of any other intention), and he did not intend a new talaq, then religiously (diyanatan) only one talaq has occurred.
