Tayammum Due to Illness
Question
A Muslim physician claims to be skilled (hadhiq) with regard to certain specific illnesses, and some people also say that his medicines for such-and-such illnesses are better than those of others. After the use of the medicine he prescribes tayammum instead of bathing (ghusl), and says: “Even if ghusl is fard, still perform tayammum.”
Answer
If a skilled, religious physician says that by performing ghusl the illness will increase or recovery will be delayed, then tayammum is valid. [ar]تيمم لبعده ميلًا عن ماء أو لمرض[/ar] “He performs tayammum because of being a mile away from water, or because of illness” (al-Kanz).
