Is a Woman Also Sinful for Abandoning I'tikaf?

Question

If no one from some settlement sat in i'tikaf, will only adult men be sinful, or will men, women, adults and minor boys also be sinful?

Answer

A minor is not mukallaf (legally responsible), so there is no sin upon him. A woman should not perform i'tikaf in the mosque; rather she should designate a place in her house and perform i'tikaf there. If no one at all performed it, all the adults will be caught in the burden of abandoning the sunna.
