Regarding One Who Abandons Fasting as a Dog or a Pig

Question

A poster is enclosed (please look at it and grant a fatwa): “In the Shari‘a of Muhammad it is clearly stated that a Muslim who does not fast in the blessed month of Ramadan and does not pray is by no means a Muslim; he is worse than a pig; such people should be cursed and relations with them should be cut off.” What do you say about this poster?

Answer

The fast of the blessed month of Ramadan is a magnificent pillar of Islam. Its obligatoriness (fard) is established by the Noble Qur’an: [ar]كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ ٱلصِّيَامُ … فَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ ٱلشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ[/ar] “Fasting has been prescribed for you… So whoever of you is present in the month, let him fast it” (Surah al-Baqara, 2:183, 185).
