How to Fast When the Day Is Long
Question
In summer the day is long: in Canada — and further north there is a day of twenty to twenty-two hours. What is the ruling on fasting for these people: will the abstention (imsak) last the whole period, or is it by estimation? For some Arabs there say that the fast should be broken at the point up to which the period of abstention lasts in the nearby region. Is this correct?
Answer
In winter the day there is presumably short (two to four hours). So, at that time too, do they fast for just that length of time, or do they calculate according to the nearby region? And how do they reckon the five prayers? Write whatever the practice is, and then, in sha’ Allah, the answer will be complete.
