Prayer at the time of sunrise
Question
The first congregation often takes place at a disliked time. For example, the fajr prayer is at 5:15, while the sun already rises at 5:10. In such a case, will the prayer count as performed on time (ada’), or is it to be performed as qada’? Or, at such a time, when [the congregation] is being delayed and there is concern that the sun is about to rise, should the worshipper perform his prayer alone, or wait for the congregation?
Answer
Prayer at the time of sunrise is not permissible. If the sun rises in the very midst of the prayer, it should be ended right there, and once the sun has risen high, [the prayer] should be performed as qada’. And when the time becomes short, [the worshipper] should perform his prayer alone and not wait for the congregation.
