Jumu'a, tarawih and qasr for the traveller
Question
I am a Roadways [bus] conductor; [my] home is in Kairana. Every day I go from Kairana to Delhi and from Delhi to Roorkee. In this situation will I pray the traveller’s prayer every day or not? Does the traveller’s prayer begin as soon as one sets out from home, or after travelling 48 miles? If on the journey the prayer is performed somewhere with a congregation (jama‘a), should I pray two rak‘as or should I pray four rak‘as? Please write in detail. And should the tarawih prayer be prayed on the journey or not?
Answer
When you go out beyond the built-up area of your home town (watan), you will become a traveller; from that time you will pray the shortened prayer (qasr) — on the road, and in Delhi and Roorkee as well: whether you pray alone or with a congregation, you will pray only qasr. If the imam is a resident (muqim), you will pray in full.
