A travelling imam praying in full
Question
What do the scholars of religion and the muftis of the firm Sacred Law say on this question: a person, while travelling, prayed his prayer as four rak‘as instead of two — deliberately or through forgetfulness, whether praying individually (munfarid) or as imam. What ruling does the Sacred Law give on this matter in both cases? Was his prayer, performed individually, fulfilled?
Answer
Itmam is not permissible for a legal traveller; rather, it is necessary to pray the four-rak‘a prayer as two: [ar]صَلَّى (الْمُسَافِرُ) الْفَرْضَ الرُّبَاعِيَّ رَكْعَتَيْنِ وُجُوبًا[/ar] “(The traveller) prays the four-rak‘a fard as two rak‘as, as a wajib” (al-Durr al-Mukhtar, vol. 1, p. 107). If the traveller performed itmam and also made the first sitting (qa‘da)
