If a prayer is missed, qada’ is wajib, not kaffara
Question
Because of an ailment, the Zuhr and ‘Asr prayers and six fasts of blessed Ramadan were missed. According to the Shari‘a, what kaffara (expiation) should there be for the qada’ of both of these?
Answer
Answer (1) Kaffara is not wajib; only qada’ is necessary: [ar]مَنْ فَاتَتْهُ صَلَاةٌ قَضَاهَا إِذَا ذَكَرَهَا[/ar] “Whoever misses a prayer is to make it up when he remembers it” (“al-Hidaya”, vol. 1, p. 134, Rashidiyya edition, Delhi). Answer (2) — Mawlana ‘Abd al-Latif If a prayer is missed, then [what is due] is qada’, not kaffara.
