Sweets on the Khatm of the Qur’an
Question
Usually the khatm of the Noble Qur’an is performed and afterwards sweets are distributed. Some huffaz also take part in it who, if they do not get sweets, are aggrieved and make excuses not to come the next time. To what extent is this kind of Qur’an recitation correct?
Answer
From this it is clear that those huffaz regard the sweets as their due for service, that is, as a fee for the recitation, even if they do not call it a fee; therefore this form is impermissible. If [the sweets] are distributed after collecting donations, then in this the limits are generally not observed; rather, in some places there is compulsion, in others showing off (riya’)
