Collecting Donations for the Khatm
Question
Collecting money “in the name of Allah” in joy at the blessed khatm, having forty kilograms of sweets made, arranging lighting and decorations for it, and especially inviting non-Muslims — is all this permissible in our religion, or is only distributing sweets permissible?
Answer
In collecting donations for sweets on the khatm of the Noble Qur’an, the limits are generally not observed: it is regarded as necessary (lazim), pressure is applied in collecting the donations, people are shamed — [as in] “so-and-so gave less” — and there is boasting; some people give under compulsion, having taken a loan. Because of these evils it is forbidden.
