Two tarawih congregations in one mosque, or two imams leading tarawih jointly
Question
A medium-sized Friday mosque has two parts, upper and lower. In the blessed month of Ramadan, may tarawih be held in both places, upstairs and downstairs — that is, each part having its own separate imam? Both are of the same school of thought. What is permitted in such a case, given that there is plenty of room downstairs and neither hafiz has a sami‘? Is it more appropriate that one hafiz recites and the other listens, or is it better that tarawih be held separately upstairs and downstairs?
Answer
Tarawih may be held in two places as well, provided the voices do not clash. But the best is that everyone prays tarawih behind the imam, and the other hafiz stays behind as sami‘, so that it is easy if there is need to give a prompt.
